Kick-off: Global Digital Cultures

2 October 2020 / 14:00 - 17:00

All Welcome!

On Friday, October 2, 2020, the University of Amsterdam will launch its new research priority area ‘Global Digital Cultures’ (GDC). Researchers and students from all faculties at the UvA, as well as non-UvA audiences with an interest in these topics, are warmly invited to this online event. There will be a keynote dialogue with Louise Amoore (Durham University), a panel discussion on GDC’s main research themes, as well as information on new seed funding for interdisciplinary research and events. You can download the full program here.

Digitisation is transforming cultural practices around the world – from changing the norms of intimacy to enabling new modes of public expression and collective action, while simultaneously facilitating ubiquitous data-driven forms of surveillance. Digital platforms and mobile apps, such as Facebook, Tinder, YouTube, Instagram, the Russian platform VK, and the China-based sites WeChat, TikTok, and Tantan, have rapidly become central to the production, circulation, consumption, and monetisation of culture. The Covid-19 crisis has further accelerated this process of digitisation making the study of these changes around the world even more pressing. GDC will critically explore these developments from a broad interdisciplinary perspective, combining insights from the social sciences, humanities and economics.

We are delighted to invite both senior researchers and Ph.D. students at the UvA to the upcoming event. The kick-off will take place on October 2, from 2pm to 5pm, in virtual format. After registering, participants will receive an email with instructions on how to access the online event.
